Bottoms Up!

Last week saw record numbers attend the Newcastle Business School Alumni annual wine tasting.

In its 8th year the event, which continues to go from strength to strength, was bigger and better than ever.  Over 120 guests from business school alumni, current students and members of the local business community, came together to sample the finest liquid offerings from Spain and Portugal.  Sommelier for the evening John Mayne and his fine selection of the best wines, port and madeira from Southern Europe, brought a sunny atmosphere to an otherwise cold and grey December night.

The event is a firm favourite in the alumni calendar, thanks to the continued support of the Business School and the business community, both locally and further afield.  Sponsors for the evening included RMT, Equiniti, Guerilla, KPMG, SD Worx, Cintra HR & Payroll Services and Payroll Services Alliance.  It offers a fantastic opportunity for current and former students to get together with the great and good of the corporate world in an informal and fun environment.  Not only is it a great evening, the Business School Alumni take the opportunity to raise funds for a worthy cause in the process, which this year was Comrades for Children Overseas (COCO); a Tyneside based international charity, founded by former world 1500-metre champion Steve Cram, which helps to fund education and healthcare initiatives that make a big difference to the lives of children living in poverty throughout the developing world.  Funds raised on the evening will contribute to the development of Kindimba Secondary School in Tanzania, part of COCO’s Schools for Life Project.

Newcastle University Business School (NUBS) has an enviable track record of building strong relationships in the world of commerce, exemplified by its active and dedicated Alumni Committee.

Carsten Staehr, Chair of the Business School Alumni is delighted that the event was such a success: “It’s fantastic that this event has now established itself as a ‘must attend’.  It is extremely well supported across the board and a great, fun evening.  The Alumni Committee enjoys a great relationship with the Business School and their support ensures that our events continue to get bigger and better.”

Commenting on the evening Professor John Wilson, Director of Newcastle University Business School said: “The annual North East Alumni wine tasting is one of the social highlights of the year.  Credit must certainly go to Alumni Chair, Carsten Staehr and his committee who, together with Ruth Warwick and her events team both organise the wine tasting and corporate sponsorship, for which we are very grateful.  It is an excellent reflection of how NUBS goes from strength to strength, building cohesion between students past and present and the corporate world.”
